The Hidden Benefits of Drinking Cinnamon

Backstory

Beyond being widely used in the desserts, cinnamon was something that has been around many cultures since the times of ancient, mainly due to a plethora of beneficial health properties, such as its ability to help detox the body, help fight indigestion, promote weight loss, lower blood sugar and even regulate menstruation.

Originating in Sri Lanka (or Ceylon, to our ancestors), the most commonly known aspect of true cinnamon happens to be its fragrance, which is known for its calming properties. It doesn’t stop there, however, and is widely used in various cleaning, health and beauty products.

The Good..

Being a rich source of magnesium, iron, calcium, fiber, and vitamins C and B1, this exotic spice is an effective treatment for diarrhea, indigestion and bloating. You can even use cinnamon to boost your immune system and can even use it to relieve problematic respiratory symptoms because of its expectorant properties.

Cinnamon can come in handy if you want to slim down as it increases the body’s ability to burn fat, basically meaning that it is thermogenic. The antioxidants that contained within cinnamon can slow the natural cellular degeneration process and reduce the effects of free radicals. Those antioxidants prevent fat from getting deposited in the arteries, which is invaluable in preventing cardiovascular disease. Consuming a cinnamon drink can help control the levels of bad cholesterol in the blood and regulate blood sugar.

Consuming cinnamon on a regular basis improves digestion and eliminates gas, and it even helps with anorexic patients by stimulating their appetite. It should be made noteworthy that cinnamon is actually also a powerful anticoagulant, which prevents blood platelets from accumulating more than they should at normal levels. While the uses for cinnamon are bordering on the unlimited, external usage of the herb include treating it as an antiseptic and its ability to eliminate fungi and bacteria.

The Bad..

With all of the above said, there are some cases where you should avoid consuming cinnamon because many of those wonderful properties can actually have negative effects on your health. These are some of those situations:

Overusing cinnamon

Chinese Cinnamon or Cassia Cinnamon is host to coumarin, a toxic compound that in high doses tends to cause damage to the liver and kidneys, so you might want to curtail its usage in your food.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

Consuming cinnamon during pregnancy can stimulate blood flow and can cause the uterus to contract. This can create a detrimental situation to the fetus, which needless to say isn’t what you want. It is also best for nursing mothers to stay away from consuming cinnamon as it can cause allergic reactions in the infant.

Patients with ulcers

Ulcers and cinnamon really don’t go together and it is best to avoid cinnamon entirely if you suffer with stomach ulcers.

Patients with heart conditions

Cinnamon tends to increase your heart rate slightly. This may not be the worst thing, but if you have a known heart condition it might be safe for you to limit your cinnamon intake, just to be safe.

In combination with antibiotics

Cinnamon is a natural antibiotic, so it may not be the best idea mixing it with any artificial substance. There is always a good chance that the two chemicals may react with each other and cause unpredictable side effects. So why not just avoid it any time you’re taking a regular prescription antibiotic, rather than risk your well-being.
